Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah’s The Eagle newspaper has been in the news lately with a first place finish in the American Scholastic Press Association competition, membership into the Utah Press Association, launching a newly designed website and adding a page on Facebook.
For the fifth consecutive year The Eagle, placed first at the ASPA 2010 competition. In addition to the first place, The Eagle was given special merit for scoring 935 points out of a possible 1,000. It was the only two-year small college to receive the special merit designation.
According to the chairperson of the ASPA’s judging committee, Richard M. Plass, Ph.D., The Eagle was an outstanding example of scholastic publication in format, content and presentation. Plass commended the staff for their dedication and concern for the improvement of their publications.

“There is no crying in volleyball,” says interim coach Grant Barraclough of the women’s volleyball team. Coach Barraclough loves three things in this world God, family, and volleyball, and why wouldn’t he? By day he works at the hospital and by night is coaching volleyball, even with this great schedule he fits time in his day with his two sons who help him to become better from day to day.
There are always struggles at the beginning of a new season, you have new members of the team, and in the case of Utah State University College of Eastern Utah a new head coach as well. This might cause stress for a normal man, leave room for doubt, but Barraclough is excited for the new adventure.
He says, “This year’s team is very hard working. They have come together in a very short time. I expect great things from them this year. It’s nice to have six players returning. They bring good experience to the table and have taken all the new girls under their wings.”

The faculty of Eastern Utah Theatre are proud to announce their inaugural season as Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah Theatre Department.
“We are proud to announce the Carbon County premiere of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Auditions were held Aug. 30, and were open to college students and the community,” said Corey Ewan, Ph.D. Sweeny Todd plays October 7-9 & 11-12, 2010.
The fall season continues with Thornton Wilder’s American classic, Our Town, playing November 11-13 & 15-16.

Finishing the season will be Neil Simon’s comedy of opposites, The Odd Couple, playing March 31, April 1-2 & 4-5, 2011. All performances will be in the Geary Theatre.

While the bulk of College of Eastern Utah’s students were on summer vacation, 10 students traveled to Kansas City, Mo., to compete in the SkillsUSA Championships. Students participated in both secondary and post-secondary divisions for their competitions.
Bringing home gold medals in the College/Postsecondary Audio (Radio) Production competition were Sheraya Barajas from Orem, and Kelton Wells from Price.

This year at USU-CEU, many changes will be taking effect, leading CEU in a positive direction.
Greg Benson, a CEU faculty member since 1999, has been appointed by Chancellor Joe Peterson to be vice chancellor for academic affairs and student services. With past experience as the dean of arts and sciences and interim vice president for academic affairs, Benson has many ideas for the 2010-2011 school year.

Following the resignations of head men’s basketball Coach Chris Craig and women’s volleyball head Coach Brent Martindale spring semester, the assistant men’s basketball Coach Brad Barton was named interim head basketball coach with assistant women’s volleyball Coach Grant Barraclough was named interim head volleyball coach.
Coach Chris Craig left College of Eastern Utah to pursue an opportunity at Division I University of Northern Colorado located in Greeley, Colo., where he will be an assistant to Head Coach B.J. Hill.

Art for the Masses, an exhibit of prints by Associated American Artists, will be on view at Gallery East from Sept. 7-30.The exhibition features 24 prints by Associated American Artists created between 1934 and 1958.
The Associated American Artists was founded in 1934 by Reeves Lewenthal as a gallery and art enterprise. Lewenthal opened a gallery in New York City to market and sell art to the middle classes in the form of prints and later as home furnishings.

Working is an awful, awful experience, and most people only work so they can afford not starving to death. When I say working, I don’t mean planting your butt in a chair and listening to people complain or bagging groceries. No, I mean sweating, bleeding, and occasionally crying for home when your coworkers can’t see you.

The definitions of attributes like kindness, courage and loyalty have remained the same since the beginning of humankind. One attribute that has undergone a lot of revision is beauty.
Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines beauty as “the quality of being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially by being looked at.” This definition focuses on quality and appearance.
